Hello Pokémon fans! It’s time to dive into the exciting new cards coming in the Mega Evolution—Phantasmal Flames expansion. This expansion promises some powerful Mega Evolution Pokémon that are set to shine in upcoming tournaments. You may recall the formidable presence of Mega Absol ex, Mega Kangaskhan ex, and Mega Gardevoir ex in the previous set. Read on to see which cards I expect to dominate the Play! Pokémon tables next month.
In this expansion, expect a powerful synergy between Mega Sharpedo ex and Toxtricity. Toxtricity’s Sinister Surge ability lets you search your deck for a Basic Darkness Energy and attach it to one of your Benched Darkness Pokémon—albeit with 2 damage counters placed on it. This can actually be beneficial, as it sets up Mega Sharpedo ex’s Hungry Jaws attack, which can hit 270 damage if it has damage counters. Given the current metagame, the duo can create formidable strategies against popular threats like Gardevoir ex.
While Mega Sharpedo ex and Toxtricity are expected to dominate, don’t overlook new cards like Mega Gengar ex and Grimsley’s Move. Mega Gengar ex features an impressive ability—Shadowy Concealment—that limits the number of Prize cards your opponent can take upon knocking out any Darkness-type Pokémon. Meanwhile, Grimsley’s Move allows for easy play of Darkness-type Pokémon without the usual evolution restrictions, positioning Mega Gengar ex as a substantial threat in the meta.
Next up is Mega-Lopunny ex, which wields an impressive attack known as Gale Thrust. This move can deal a staggering 230 damage if Mega-Lopunny ex moved from the Bench that turn. The card is being compared to Bloodmoon Ursaluna ex for its efficiency in various deck archetypes, making it a must-have for competitive play.
The versatility of Mega Lopunny ex in a deck with Mega Lucario ex could prove game-changing against Psychic-type attackers while maintaining the edge in several matchups. Expect to see it integrated into various competitive strategies.
Let’s not forget Mega Diancie ex, which packs a punch with its attack that can deal up to 240 damage. It fits seamlessly into Gardevoir ex decks, addressing a few gaps for high-HP attackers and offering formidable counterplay against Pokémon like Jellicent ex.
Finally, bridging the gap in Pokémon search is Dawn. This card enhances deck consistency by allowing you to search for a Basic and an Evolution Pokémon. Especially in an era dominated by Item lock strategies, having robust search options is crucial.
The Mega Evolution—Phantasmal Flames expansion delivers exciting possibilities for players, especially those focusing on Darkness-type Pokémon. With so many diverse strategies coming into play, I’m eager to see how players will adjust their decks in preparation for upcoming tournaments.
