Exciting news for Pokémon fans! From March 28th to 29th, Cape Town will host a pivotal Pokémon Special Event tournament, marking a significant highlight in the 2026 competitive scene. This tournament is expected to attract players both from South Africa and around the globe, making it the largest gathering of Pokémon enthusiasts in the country this year.
Set to occur at the picturesque Blaauwberg Beach Hotel, the “Cape Town Pokémon Special Championships 2026” will feature competitions in the Trading Card Game (TCG), Video Game Championships (VGC), and Pokémon GO.
While the event promises fun and excitement, the main attraction is the opportunity to earn Championship Points, potentially paving the way to qualify for the prestigious Pokémon World Championships. Notably, the winner of the Masters division of the TCG will receive an automatic invitation to the World Championships, alongside flights and accommodation in San Francisco, where the World Championships will be held.
All participants will be rewarded with TCG booster packs, and each player will receive two boosters just for competing. Additional spot prizes and surprises await attendees throughout the event.
Tickets are currently available on Quicket, starting at R250. Please note that prices vary based on age divisions and event categories. Quicket also applies a booking fee, and tickets are non-refundable unless insurance is purchased.
A Change in the Tournament Landscape for South Africa
Traditionally, South Africa has hosted two major Pokémon tournaments each year, offering players multiple opportunities to earn competitive points and engage with international participants. Events have typically been held across major cities like Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town, where a significant number of competitive players reside.
Regrettably, for 2026, the number of tournaments has been reduced to one. This news was shared by Solarpop, the official distributor of the Pokémon TCG, via their Unplug Yourself initiative on Facebook. According to their announcement, the Cape Town event will stand as the sole tournament of its kind this season.
This shift poses a considerable challenge for local players aiming to qualify for the Pokémon World Championships. The qualification system tends to favor regions with more opportunities, and South Africa is combined with the Middle Eastern region for this purpose. This means that South African players may find themselves at a disadvantage, needing to invest significant financial resources and time to compete abroad for qualification points.
The community hopes that the reduction in tournaments for 2026 is a temporary situation rather than a new standard for the future. For ongoing updates and details, make sure to stay connected with reputable sources for Pokémon news.
